Git Gud – Managing infrastructure and accounts with GitOps through Control Tower and Account Factory for Terraform (AFT)

Terence White, ClearPoint
SRE Practice Lead, ClearPoint Digital

Terence has been working with AWS for over 6 years in both public sector and private. He is an AWS Community Builder and is on the committee of the AWS User Group of NZ, and has previously represented New Zealand on the AWS Public Sector Cloud Alliance. He has been doing various roles in IT since he left uni over 25 years ago, and to tell the truth probably a large number of unpaid years before that.

If you have lots of AWS accounts in your organisation you really should be considering AWS Control Tower to manage them. Adding in creation and automation around infrastructure for new accounts is a bit of a pain using StackSets or Customisations for Control Tower (CfCT). You can use the new AWS supplied Account Factory for Terraform (AFT) to allow you to create new accounts through Control Tower by committing account creation requests to your Git repo and then have AFT and Terraform provision and manage the infrastructure for you in the new account all automatically.

Underrated EC2 features that we all should know about!

This month we are joined by Paulo Almeida.

Paulo is a HPC & AI Architect at National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). He gets to turn interesting research ideas into optimised software to run on NZ’s supercomputers 🙂 Outside of the business hours, he is writing a MOS 6502 emulator to kill time while it’s still winter in New Zealand. He started his career as a software developer but also wore many different hats such as Solutions Architect at AWS and R&D Architect, DevOps Engineer and the list goes on. He has a keen interest in reading source code of many open source projects, studying their data structures and train of thought as a hobby. Recently, he wrote his own operating system just for fun and he’s currently working on a couple of drivers in the Linux Kernel. When he is not doing any of that, he writes technical deep dives for his blog: https://deepdives.medium.com/
